Is
the center of Eastern Christian Orthodox
Monasticism. Set in an area of outstanding
natural beauty, it is a treasury which houses and
guards many artifacts and monuments of religions,
national and artistic value.
It is also a
"workshop" where religions arts and crafts
are still practiced to this day, and where deep and
genuine spirituality is allowed to flourish and bear
fruit.
As an institution Mount Athos is,
and has been, the chief standard bearer of Orthodox
Christianity.

Jeg har nettopp vært der, ja, bare via TVen altså!
Kvinner har ingen adgang!
Den dagen jeg gikk den flotte turen oppi åsen så jeg Athos
fjellet i det fjerne mot nord. Det ble ikke noe foto av det, for
så klart var det ikke!
På NET TV viste de noe av den vakre naturen på Athos, noen av
klostrene og kirkene, og hvordan de jobber med å restaurere
gamle bøker, documenter, ikoner og gamle fotografier. Meget
interessant. Jeg var forbauset over hjemmesiden deres, meget
sofisticated og oppdatert.
Fra TV programmet lærte jeg at mange menn drar til Athos og de
har med seg sine kunskaper og ting som digitalt kamera og
scanner!
Jeg har blitt fortalt at Megistri Lavra, et av de største
klostrene på Athos, eier Kyra Panagia, øya i Marineparke
utenfor Alonnisos, som jeg besøker flere ganger hver sommer.
Samtidig som Megistri Lavra ble grunnlagt i
963, donerte Keiser Nikiforas Focas 70 gullmynter til Athanasios, grunnleggeren av Megistri Lavra,
så han kunne kjøpe øya Kyra Panagia av lokale munker som
bodde der!

do you know what it is?
I have just been there, well, just in the TV! Women are not
allowed there! The day I took the walk up at the hillside I saw
Mount Athos fare away to the north,
but not good enough
for a photo!
On NET TV they showed some of the beautiful nature of Athos,
some monasteries and churches and how they are working to
restore old books, documents, icons and old photographs. Very
interesting. I was surprised when I looked up their web site,
very updated. On TV they showed that many different men are
attracted to Athos, and of course they bring with them their
skills and modern things like a digital camera and scanners!
I have been told that Megistri Lavra, one of the
bigger monasteries on Athos, owns Kyra Panagia, an island in the
Marinepark just up from Alonnisos, that I visit many times
during the summer.
At the same time that Megistri Lavra was funded in 963, emperor
Nikiforas Focas donated 70 gold coins to the monk Athanassios,
the fonder of Megistri Lavra so he could by Kyra Panagia from
some local monks who was living there!

Mount Athos (Greek:
Όρος Άθως) is a mountain
on the peninsula
of the same name in Macedonia,
northern Greece,
called in Greek
Άγιον Όρος (Ayion
Oros or Agion Oros, transliterated often as Hagion
Oros), or in English, "Holy Mountain". In Classical
times, the peninsula was called Ακτή (Acte
or Akte). Politically it is known in Greece
as the Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain.
This World
Heritage Site is home to 20 Eastern
Orthodox monasteries
and forms a self-governed monastic state within the sovereignty
of the Hellenic
Republic. Spiritually, Mount Athos comes under the direct
jurisdiction of the Ecumenical
Patriarchate of Constantinople.
The peninsula, the easternmost
"leg" of the larger Chalcidice
peninsula, protrudes into the Aegean
Sea for some 60 kilometres (37 mi) at a width
between 7 to 12 km and covers an area of 335.637 square
kilometres (129.59 sq mi), with the actual Mount Athos
and its steep, densely forested slopes reaching up to 2,033 metres
(6,670 ft). The seas around the end of the peninsula can be
dangerous.
Though land-linked, it
is accessible only by boat. The number of visitors is restricted
and all are required to get a special entrance permit before
entering Mount Athos. Only males are allowed entrance into Mount
Athos, which is called "Garden of the Virgin" by monks[1],
and Orthodox Christians take precedence in the permit issuance
procedure. Only males over the age of 18 who are members of the Eastern
Orthodox Church are allowed to live on Athos. There are
religious guards, who are not monks, that assist the monks,
and any other people not monks are required to live in the
peninsula's capital, Karyes.
The 2001 Greek
national census counted a population of 2,262 inhabitants."

that challenged the Greek
gods during the Gigantomachia. Athos threw a massive
rock against Poseidon
which fell in the Aegean
sea and became the Athonite Peninsula. According to another

det kreves av alle å få en spesialtillatelse før de ankommer
Athos. Bare menn slippes inn i området og ortodokse kristne
blir prioritert i tillatelsesprosedyrene. Der er religiøse
vakter som ikke er munker som assisterer munkene.
Alle andre som ikke er munker er påkrevd å leve i halvøyas
hovedstad, Karyes.
Dagens befolkning er rundt 2250 innbyggere.
En spesiell tradisjon på Athos er at barn
og kvinner og alle husdyr av hunkjønn ikke har adgang til området."
