My Vidaki;

Spinalonga

Spinalonga
A small island with a Venetian fortress from 1579, just outside the small village of Plaka, a bit north of Agios Nikolaos, north-east on Crete. What is special with this island? I wrote about the island in the end of last year, after reading the book "The Island" by Victoria Hislop.

The island was the last leper colony of Greece (from 1903), - the last leper died here in 1953, and since then the island has been uninhabited.

I wanted to visit the island after I read the book, and I am glad I did. It was strange and my thoughts went to what had happened there. Not so much what
the Venetian or the Turks did, but
to all those who shared the same
destiny, leprosy!
Those who discovered a wound, went to the doctor, yes, it was leprosy. They was immediately sent out to the island, - most of them never returning ever again.
They had to leave their families, their friends, a normal, good life.
A child taken away from its mother ...

Now I am sitting here at Koutsouras on the balcony, seeing the sun rising, listening to the sound of the waves. It is a bit chilly, I put at shawl on. I have my water bottle and soon I am going to my friends for breakfast. I am no leper, nobody turns their back on me ...

What was left ...

We went out thereon a real "kaiiki"
El Greko, it leaves every half hour and costs 8,- € . One are put ashore and then free to wonder round as one likes. Entrance fee 2,- €. We were there for at least an hour.
There is a kafenion there, but can you imagine they did not have MYTHOS, they were sold out of all beers!
I had a water, better!

We had lunch at Gorgona
in the sun with the view of the island, see my top photo.
How many has stayed here seeing their loved ones being taken away ..
How many have stayed here waving ... How many sent out goods ...
How many never came back ...

The island of Spinalonga (official name: Kalidon) is located at the eastern section of  Crete, near the town of Elounda. The name of the island, Spinalonga, is Venetian, meaning "long thorn", and has roots in the period of Venetian occupation. This location is also the setting for Victoria Hislop's bestselling novel The Island.

Last Words (German; Letzte Worte) is a 1968 shirt film by Werner Herzog shot in Crete and on the island of Spinalonga.
The film was shot in two days during the filming of Herzog's feature
Signs of Life, and edited in one day.

The film tells a story of the last man to leave the abandoned island of Spinalonga, which had been used as a leper colony. The man refused to leave, and so was forcibly removed. He now lives in Crete, where he plays the lyre at nights in a bar, and refuses to speak. The film's narrative style is very unconventional, with most characters speaking their lines several times repeatedly in long takes. The man from the island has the most spoken lines of any character, as he repeatedly explains that he refuses to speak, even a single word.

Werner Herzog - Letzte Worte (1968)
en rar film ...  a strange movie ...
