Agios Riginos!
Øyas skytshelgen har sin kirke på vei ut
av byen på "Nyveien" mot Panormos.
Legg merke til mandeltrærne som "lyser"! Innfellt hans minnesmerke ved T-krysset ut av byen, ved Nastas
Taverna.
Riginos var øyas første
biskop og døde som martyr 25. februar 362, der hans minnesmerke
står, halshugget av tyrkerene fordi han ikke ville gi opp
sin tro!
Kirken vi ser i dag er fra
1728, og er bygget på ruiner av en 6. århundrede tempelruin.
På denne dagen vil hele byen
dra til denne kirken for å minnes helgenen og hans
levningene vil bli tatt frem
og velsignes.
PS - Da jeg var på Kypros
ble jeg fortalt at litt av Agios Riginos levninger finnes der!
Fant aldri ut av det!

25th of March is the nameday of
Agios Riginos!
The patron saint of the island has his church
on the "new" road to Panormos, just outside of town.
Note the almond trees that "lights" up! The small inserted photo is of his memory place at the T-junction by Nastas
Taverna, just at the outskirts of town.
Riginos was the islands first
bishop and died as a martyr on February the 25th in 362,
beheaded by the Turks because he did not want to give up
his faith
in God!
The church we see today is from
1728, and is built on ruins from a 6th century tempel.
On this day all the villagers goes
to this church for the memory
of Agios Riginos.
His relics will be blessed.
PS - When I worked in Cyprus, I
was told that there are a part of the relics of Agios Riginos there
as well. I did not find out more!
