1. Mai -
The 1st of May

Dagens musikk link; Todays music link;

Προτο Μαια

En sang fra YouTube om første mai som du kan lytte
 til som bakgrund mens du leser her!

A song from YouTube called First of May, that you can
listen to while you read here!

Xronia Polla

"Kom mai du skjønne
milde,
gjør skogen atter grønn.."
- en skjønn sang og jeg har den
i den eneste boken jeg har med meg fra Bolteløkka Skole, i Oslo;
Folkeskolens sangbok av
Gjermund Hulaas, Rolv Nordal og Hans Stordal,
Cappelen, Oslo 1960

hadde i håret.

for 2 tzatziki, 1 skordalja, 1 salat,
2 sprøstekt squasj, 2 hjemmelavde, nydelige kjøttboller, 1 vann og 4 halvlitere Mythos.

"Come May sweat and mild, make the fields green again ..."
- a wonderful song that is written in my Songbook from school, the only book I have left from my early school days in Oslo.
In Norway it did not always mean spring in May, could still be cold days, but here it is lovely spring!

The 1st of May is a big day in Greece. Here it is a Spring Festival as well as Greek Labor Day.
The day has ancient origins and many of the customs has survived into modern times.
Many of the customs are due to May day being a cross-quarter-day, meaning that it falls approximately halfway between a solstice and an equinox.

A day when most decorates their entrance door, the car, the boat, the bicycle, the kalivi, the ...
- with a wrath of flowers.
A day when the family is gathered for maybe the last holiday before the season starts.
I know that "my" grocery shops family is going to Mila Beach, where they will have a BBQ, they will enjoy themselves, eating, drinking, singing, dancing, but I do not
think swimming.

A friend in "Ameriki", from Skopelos, told me that his mother had remembered him that every 1st of May when they were small, they made "Kolaiines" - wraths of white daisies - that they had on their heads.

Demonstrations in the big cities, but nice and quiet here, as fare as I know!

2008; We went to Agnondas and had a lovely lunch in the sun on the beach. Anything better?

Many people out, many Greek families, all enjoying themselves.
Is there anything better for
children and youngsters than to
play on the beach?

38,- € for the lunch; 2 tzatziki,
1 skordalja, 1 salad, 2 deep fried squash slices, 2 homemade, lovely meatballs, 1 water and 4 half liters bottles of Mythos.
In Oslo 1/2 liter of beer costs from 54,- NOK - about 7,- € at a cafe/restaurant.
Here I think you can have one from 2,- €, but mostly a bit more.

YouTube - Another 1st of May song;

Athens 2004 - Alexiou & Dalaras  Ta pseftika ta logia

"Greek singer George Dalaras performs ''Ta pseftika ta logia'' (Correct name is "Mana Mou Ellas") at the closing ceremony of the XXVIII Olympic Games in Athens, 2004."

LYRICS IN ENGLISH
(Thanks to christosm for this one):

Oh
I have no house to come back home;
no bed to sleep my own.
I have no neighborhood, no way
to walk the First of May.

You talked that big fake talk
to me with your first milk.
And now the snakes draw close
you wear your antique clothes.
And — Mother Hellas! — you sell those you rear
as slaves, with nary a tear.

You talked that big fake talk
to me with your first milk.
And while I spoke with Fate,
you donned your antique pride,
and dragged me to the fair, a Gypsy's tow —
Greece, Greece, mother of woe.

You talked that big fake talk
to me with your first milk.
And now the flames grow tall,
you smile at antique frills.
And — Mother Hellas! — to the world's soirees
you lug the same old lies.

Oh
I have no saint to hear me pray;
no light for an empty sky.
I have no stars, no sun by day
to sing the First of May."

Dagens sitat;    Todays quote;

“May flowers always line your path
and sunshine light your day.
May songbirds serenade you every step along the way. May a rainbow run beside you in a sky
that's always blue.
And may happiness fill your heart
each day your whole life through.”

Irish Blessing

"Må blomster alltid stå ved din vei
og solskinn lyse opp din dag.
Må sangfugler synge deg hvert trinn langs din sti.
Må en regnbue løpe ved siden av deg
på en himmel som alltid er blå.
Og må lykke fylle ditt hjerte
hver dag gjennom hele ditt liv"
