men jeg synes det er helt
herlig! På en båt som selger svamper, skjell m.m. er Jomfruen
plassert midt i det hele!
Sikkert for beskyttelse av båten og
spesielt svampdykkeren!

Jomfru Marias Himmelfart
Fra en herlig bok;
GREEK HANDBOOK by Tom Stone,
Lycabettus Press;
"En meget stor helligdag, kanskje
nr. 2 etter påsken. Det er
storutrykk fra byene, spesielt til
Tinos, hvor de har en
ikon av
Jomfru Maria som sier kan gjøre mirakel, spesielt til å
lege psykiske lidelser. Relgiøse fest/høytid er
holdt i eller ved enhver kirke
som har
tilknytning til Jomfruen.
Det anbefales ikke å reise på i disse dagene fordi alle
transportmiddler er fulle av en masse mennesker."

Ved Panagia Papameletio, kirken
rett ved mitt hus, har kvinnene i nabolaget holdt på med å vaske
og hvitvaske
inne i kirken,
de har pusset messing og vinduer,
fått flere
blomsterpotter utenfor, gjerdet er nymalt (av en mann)
og kirkeklokkene synger mer
og mer
hver dag!
Her er mer greske turister enn noen annen
gang på året,
- noen har tilknytning hit via en far eller bestemor, noen har hus
her og andre vil bare komme hit!
En stuepike jeg kjenner, klager,
fordi grekerne ikke kommer seg ut
av rommene før godt etter 12, dette gir henne kort tid til å
vaske rommene før hun er ferig på jobb!
Vanlige (norske) turister er tidlig
oppe for å utnytte mest av dagen!
De greske drar gjerne rett fra
stranden for å spise middag (i badetøy), så hjem for å sove og
etter midnatt på byen!
IKKE én taverna, butikk eller bar
stenger p.g.a. helgen,
- de er åpne så mye som mulig!
Det er nå man kan tjene penger slik at man kan leve godt over
vinteren!
SLANGER
De viste nettopp på TV at små slanger/ormer med et kors på
hodet, kommer frem i visse kirker 15. august!
De viste hvordan slangene ble holdt av folk, viklet seg rundt ikoner og på prestens
messe stav! Hvis slangene ikke kommer frem et år betyr det fare!
Det sies at de ikke kom frem på Kefalonia det året de fikk
det
store jordskjelvet!

Virgin Mary's Assumption Day

"A very big national holiday, perhaps the second largest of the
year after Easter. There is a mass exodus from the cities, particularly
to the island of Tinos, where an icon of the Virgin Mary is said to
have wrought many miracles especially in curing physical ills. Religious feast are held at or near most churches associated with
the Virgin.
It is advisable not to attempt to
travel anywhere on the days
surrounding this festival as all means
of transportation are packed
with a seething mass of humanity."
At the church Panagia Papamelthio, just up from my
house, the women of the neighborhood has be preparing for days; more
flowerpots outside, all in- and outside washed and painted, the
brass and windows are shining, the outside fence is painted (by a
man)
and the church bells are "singing"
more and more!
Here are more Greek tourist now than any other
time of the year,
- some have connections to the island thru a father or a grandmother,
some
have a house here and some just
wants to be here!
A chambermaid I know, complains, because the Greeks do not get out
of the rooms in the morning, - that does not give her much time to
clean the rooms before her shift is over!
"Normal" tourists get out
early to use the whole day! The Greeks may go straight from the beach to the taverna for dinner,
in their swimming clothes, home to sleep and out after midnight!
NOT óne taverna, shop or bar will
close for this
holiday, - they are open more than ever!
This is the time for making money so one can live through the winter!
SNAKES
They just showed on TV that small snakes with a cross on their head,
comes out in some churches at the 15th of August. They showed how people hold the snakes, how the snakes was on the icons and on the mass
spear of the priest! If the snakes does not come out one year it is a warning!
It is said that they did not come out the year Kefalonia had their
big earthquake!

"Panagia (Greek:
Παναγία, All-holy),
also Panayia or Panaghia, is one of the titles
of
Maria, the mother of Jesus, used especially in Orthodox
Christianity.
There are many Orthodox and
Eastern Catholic churches dedicated to
Maria that are called Panagia.
Panagia is also the
term for a particular type of icon of the Theotokos,
facing the viewer directly, usually depicted full length with
her hands in the orphans position, and with the image of
Christ as a child in front of her chest.
Panagia may also
refer to prosfora which is solemnly blessed (αρτος
της
παναγιας) in honor of
the Theotokos during the Devine Liturgy, a practice today usually only performed in Greek
monasteries.
This bread is blessed over the holy table, before the blessing of the
antidoron,
with the phrase "Great is the name of the Holy Trinity." After the liturgy, the bread is distributed

There are numerous island and
villages in Greece and Cyprus named Panagia. Many of these take their name from the
churches
and monasteries there, which are dedicated to Mary. Some of
them are:

common diminutive: Ghiota) and Panaghiotis
(masculine; pronunciation: Pah-nah-YAW-tees; common

mother of Jesus and consequently their namedays are celebrated as if they were named
Mary

Tinos church to accept email prayers - Athens New
Greece's holiest
pilgrimage site on the island of Tinos has launched an email
