Stor gresk nasjonaldag
Dagen da
frigjøringskrigen mot tyrkerene
startet i 1821 - Den greske revolusjonen.
Pelepones.

Flaggets
farver
(Gresk:
Επανάσταση Elliniki
Epanastasi, Tyrkisk:

Greek
National Anniversary
The day when the war of independence
against the Turks started in 1821.
This celebrates Greece's victory in the war of Independence
against the Turks who had occupied the country for 400 years.
The 25th of March was actually the day Bishop Germanos of
Patras raised the flag of national rebellion at the monastery
of Agia Lavra in the northern Peloponnesus.
A major religious
holiday with military parades in the larger towns and
cities.
Here the schoolchildren parades and it is a big honor for the
ones who carries the flag, - as fare as I know, they are the
best students.
THE
DESIGN AND
PATTERNS OF THE FLAG
The number of the lines is based on the number of
the syllables in the Greek phrase: Eleutheria H Thanatos (Freedom or Death)
THE COLORS OF
THE FLAG
Galano Lefki - Blue
and White
These two colors symbolize the blue of the Greek Sea and
the Whiteness of the restless Greeks waves and freedom!
According to the mythic legends, the Goddess of Beauty, Aphrodite
emerged from these waves.
In addition, it reflects the blue of the
Greek Sky and the White of the few clouds that travel in it. There are
some who suggest that the blue and white was symbolizes the similar
color of the clothing (vrakes) of the Greek sailors during the Greek
War of Independence.
The
Greek War of Independence
(1821-1831),
Επανάσταση Elliniki
Epanastasi, Turkish:
Yunan İsyanı, i.e. "Greek insurgence"), was
a successful war waged by the Greeks to win independence for Greece
from the
Ottoman
Empire. Independence was
finally granted by the Treaty
of Constantinople in July1832
when Greece (Hellas) was recognized as a free country. The
Greeks were the first of the subject peoples of the Ottoman
Empire
to secure recognition as a
sovereign power.

og dette kom pr. mail fra en venninde i Norge;
This
was sent me by a friend, and it is about
Evangelistria Monastery in Skiathos;
"The church of the monastery retains on its main altar
(decorated by a Bible between two scimitars, a very modern association
of symbols) what is considered the first flag of Modern Greece, a
white cross on a blue background. It was first raised in 1807 during a
failed revolt against the Turks. The Greek flag was subsequently
modified following the pattern of the American flag with the addition
of nine white and blue stripes: a reference to the first nine
syllables "Se gnoriso apo tin kopsi (We knew thee of old)"
of the Greek national anthem "Hymn to Eleftheria (Freedom)",
written by Dionysios Solomos, - a poet from Zante."
*****
"Ymnos
eis tin Eleftherian" (Ode to Freedom)
from nationalanthems.info/gr
Words by: Dionysios
Solomós
Music by: Nikolaos Mantzaros
Adopted: 1864
The Greek Anthem is based on the
"Hymn to the Freedom", a large 158 verse poem
written by Dionysios Solomos, a distinguished poet from
Zakynthos Island. It was inspired by the Greek Revolution of
1821 against the Ottoman Empire. During 1828, the eminent
musician from Kerkyra Island Nikolaos Mantzaros composed the
music for Solomos' hymn. Although King Othon (Otto)
decorated both of them for their work (1845 and 1849), he
did not replace the Royal Anthem of that time with the
Solomos/Mantzaros hymn. The anthem was a musical derivative
from the German one, with a text glorifying Othon and his
dynasty. After the overthrow of the dynasty, the new King
George I and the Greek establishment decided to look for a
clearly Greek work, both with respect to the poetry and the
music. The "Hymn to the Freedom" was readily there
- extremely popular since the Revolution times, often
recited or sung during patriotic meetings and celebrations.
The Greek anthem is also used in Cyprus,
which has a substantial Greek community.
Special thanks to: Theo
Stylianides for providing me with the sheet music.
