O ProjhthV o HliaV
20. IoulioV
kirker ligger på en høyde;

20th of July is Elias
nameday, and the church you see here is the Prophet Elias on the
way to Glisteri beach. It is situated on a hill where you may see
the sea, - where on Skopelos do you not see the sea from a hill? It is just behind the crossroads
Skopelos-Glisteri-Karidia, if your
nose is pointing at Glisteri.
It is a kind of Y junction. There are paths up from both sides of
the crossroads.
Here is the story about why all
the Elias chapels are on a hilltop;

"Do you know the legend of why the Prophet's
chapels are
located on hilltops?"
"Well, it seems that before the Prophet Elias was a Prophet,
he
was a seaman who'd spent a good many years at sea. He finally
became
so tired of it that he decided to get as fare away from the
water as
possible. So he set out for unknown places on land, carrying
an oar
across each shoulder. He stopped at the first village he came
to and
asked them to tell him what he was carrying. They did.
This was not
the place for him. He went further on. He climbed
a high mountain,
stopping at every village along the way to ask
the same question.
They all recognized the oars. At last,
after much traveling, he
reached the top, deep in the mountains,
and asked the villagers there to identify the objects on his shoulders.
They could not. They had never seen them before. "Aha,"
he exclaimed,
"this is the place for me. Here I will build my
chapel and
spend the rest of my days." And he did. He built a little
church and settled there until his death.
Since then, all the chapels of the Prophet Elias are found on
hilltops,
far away from the sea."
Min korte oversettelse;
fjelltopp."
