For many years I have tried to get up to this
tower,
but nobody could tell
me the way!
Sunday we drove off the main road just after Loutsa, as fare as we
could go!
We parked by a kalivi, pointed at the tower and the climbing
started! The most difficult walk I ever have taken, there was no
path! After 20 minutes with climbing under fallen trees, through
bushes, - you name it, we saw the tower!
It was just in front of us!
We made it!
It was fantastic up there, a map I have says it is only 191 meters
above sea level.
What kind of tower?
I have always believed that it was a signal/watch tower!
They were all over the island, and could signal to each other if
any danger!
In an old book about Skopelos by D. Sampson it is written that it
is the remains of an ancient fortification.
Close by farmers once found security in an occasion of a sudden
invasion.
In a new publication it is said that it was a
windmill!
I believe that they made it a wind mill much later. If you look at
the photo where the doggies and I are in the door, you will notice
that in the upper 3rd part, the stones are different.
Anyway it was so good to
finally get there!
This was in February 2006, we also went in
March.
We walked up from the Panormos side, we were told it would be a
path there,
but no!
That was confirmed by a lady we met later, - the path is gone!
